Book: The Enemy
Author: Charlie Higson
Series: The Enemy #1
They'll chase you. They'll rip you open. They'll feed on you ...When the sickness came, every parent, police officer, politician - every adult - fell ill. The lucky ones died. The others are crazed, confused and hungry. Only children under fourteen remain, and they're fighting to survive. Now there are rumours of a safe place to hide.
I have a soft spot for Zombies, I know a strange thing to have but I do :) So when I heard about Charlie Higson's series I knew I had to pick it up!
The Enemy starts where the world is already in tatters and has been for a while, which is unique as most book series start of with everything wonderful and then chaos descends. What else is unique is Charlie Higson has created a world like none other I have read and a different take on Zombies or grownups as they are called in The Enemy. The grownups still have the classic traits of the traditional zombie but with added awesomeness!
I really enjoyed the story in The Enemy, it was fast paced, heart racing and full of detail that I could imagine I was there, fighting alongside and trying to survive with small Sam or Sophie. The opening scenes really had me hooked and immersed in the world Charlie Higson's had created.
Charlie Higson isn't afraid to write it how it is, to make the world he has created not all hearts and flowers. He has created a world where kids are fighting for survival every minute of every day, constantly on alert. And each day changing them more and more into cruel and vicious humans none better than the grownups themselves.
There is alot of characters in The Enemy and it jumps from POV to POV but after you get used to it, it is easier to follow as you are so engaged in the story. I really enjoyed that there was lots of characters, this would usually be a negative for me having so many characters as I usually get lost but not in The Enemy. It just felt right to have all these characters.
Overall I enjoyed The Enemy. It had a great, unique storyline, engaging characters and amazing writing. I can't wait to read the next book in the series!
