Guest Post: My Writing Space by Karen Saunder's

My Writing Space by Karen Saunder's

Hi, I’m Karen Saunders, and I’m the author of the Suzy P books. I’m here on the blog today to show you my writing space, and to tell you there’s a new Suzy book available to buy now, Suzy P: Forever Me. I’m very excited about it, so I hope you all enjoy it!

All three of the Suzy P books were written on this very computer, on this very desk. My study is quite small, and actually very messy, although I’m usually a very tidy person, which is why you can’t see much of it, I was too embarrassed. I really need to get a proper filing system sorted out in here. I’ve tidied it up specially to take this photograph, which is probably cheating, but I’m too ashamed to show you it in its full-on messy state.

My study is our spare room in our house, and it’s the smallest room we have upstairs.
Down the side of the desk are some of the props I use when I go into schools, such as the box of Jelly Babies. Students are usually very disappointed when they realise there aren’t any Jelly Babies in it!

While I was writing Suzy P, Forever Me that wall behind my monitor was covered with post-its which had all the different chapters written on and what was happening in them. It looks very sparse in here now I’ve taken them all down! This was because I had a few issues getting the plot to work as I wanted it to, so needed something visual to help me move things around. This was something new I tried, and it really did work! I’ve usually got post-its about all sorts of things stuck up around the place to remind me to do all the things I forget about.

My writing room has a very nice view which I often spend far too long staring out of, pretending I’m trying to get inspired, when usually I’m just pondering what I fancy for tea. Don’t tell my editor I said that…

When you get a kindle don't make my mistake!

Anyone who knows me knows I was against e-readers. I love my paperbacks but I gave in and was gifted a Kindle from my dad for Christmas. I was still slightly weary of using it but then something happened... that one click button and then YOU HAVE A BOOK. I now have a eBook buying addiction and it isn't helping that I am still buying paperbacks as well!! Now I have loads of eBooks and not enough time to read them!

Another thing I can't stop read doing is requesting books on Netgalley :( It is so easy to click on a great book that isn't available yet from some of your favourite publisher's. And now I have tons of books that need to be reviewed and I am such a slow reader and a mood reader so that pile is not moving!!!

The point of this post is if you get a kindle or have one and  I know it is easier said than done but try not to hit that button too much. Also if you can't read them fast enough don't request to many books on Netgalley. I am slowing trying to get though them and trying not to request books but when you get the email saying you are approved my heart does get a little bit bigger :) Fingers crossed I can get though all the books ASAP!

Anyone have the same issues? Let me know how I can make myself stop lol

Review

Re reading Glory again I fell in love with it. It is a quick, exciting book that has all the elements I love in a book, romance, mystery, paranormal creatures galore and hot guys I can fall in love with :) I read it really quickly and if I had of had the time to read it in one sitting I would have.

The main protangist in Glory is seventeen year old Glory Templeton who's blood holds the cure to a deadly pandemic plague and embarks on a journey to save humanity. Glory is a great female protangist and even though she is in danger from human and super natural beings she still tries to stay strong and complete her mission. She cares about the rest of humanity, not just herself.

One of the great points about Glory by Devin O Branagan is that on Glory's quest she is joined by three supernatural guardians. Kind, independent, pretty, young witch Kaia, good-looking cowboy vampire, Zane and handsomely dark and mysterious angel. Dominic. Along the way we get to know about how each character ticks and how they became who they are all.

We once again like many YA books I think, is a love triangle between Glory, vampire Zane and angel Dominic. I really like love triangles and I really liked seeing how different Glory was with each guy. Passionate and overwhelming with Zane and an intense, caring love for Dominic. You always have a favorite in a love triangle and I did. I love Zane :)

Finally how can we forget about Hallie, Glory's Australian Shepard dog. She is her faithful companion the whole way though the story which was great to see.

Overall I really enjoyed Glory. It has a great storyline, great characters and is a great read. It is a book I highly recommend people pick up!

Q: Hi Kelly, what attracts you to writing paranormal? From Catherine Stine

A: Hi, Catherine! I've always loved paranormal because it's like our world only better. The idea of beings with supernatural abilities is really intriguing to me and has been since I was very young. It's easy to lose myself in a world of paranormal abilities because there are so many I'd love to have.

Q: Hi Kelly! Do you have a favorite song? From Cassandra @ Cassandra's writing world

A: Hey, Cassandra. A favorite song? Eek, that's a tough one. Lately I'm obsessed with "Just Tonight" by The Pretty Reckless, but really my favorite song changes with my mood or what book I'm currently writing. I tend to find a song that reflects the tone I'm going for, and I listen to it on repeat until I'm finished with the book. I know I really love the song when I still want to listen to it after all that. ;) One of my all-time favorite songs would have to be "Brown Eyed Girl" since I am one.

Q: You write and also edit other's work- What do you do to rewind, when you need a break from all the worlds? Also: Hello! *waves* From Leandra Wallace

A: *Waves* Hello to you! Believe it or not, I read. I love words. I find if I'm not writing or editing, I want to be reading. But on the occasions when I need a break from it all, I turn up some music and sing and dance with my daughter, who doesn't mind that mommy can't dance or sing very well.

Q: What inspired you to become a writer? From Kerry-Ann @Reading A Little Bit Of Everything

A: Hi, Kerry-Ann. When I first learned to read, I was hooked. To me, authors were the coolest people ever. I used to read so much I'd get eyestrain, so I decided to start writing as well. I remember writing poems, short stories, and even my first novel in elementary school. It's just part of who I am.

Q:Why are you so awesome? From Megan @ Reading Away The Days (Thats from me :-P )

A: Aw, Megan, YOU are the awesome one. <3 Thanks so much for having me.

Clary Fray just wishes that her life would go back to normal. But what's normal when you're a demon-slaying Shadowhunter, your mother is in a magically induced coma, and you can suddenly see Downworlders like werewolves, vampires, and faeries? If Clary left the world of the Shadowhunters behind, it would mean more time with her best friend, Simon, who's becoming more than a friend. But the Shadowhunting world isn't ready to let her go — especially her handsome, infuriating, newfound brother, Jace. And Clary's only chance to help her mother is to track down rogue Shadowhunter Valentine, who is probably insane, certainly evil — and also her father.

To complicate matters, someone in New York City is murdering Downworlder children. Is Valentine behind the killings — and if he is, what is he trying to do? When the second of the Mortal Instruments, the Soul-Sword, is stolen, the terrifying Inquisitor arrives to investigate and zooms right in on Jace. How can Clary stop Valentine if Jace is willing to betray everything he believes in to help their father?

In this breathtaking sequel to City of Bones, Cassandra Clare lures her readers back into the dark grip of New York City's Downworld, where love is never safe and power becomes the deadliest temptation

To make things worse, she learns that Jace does not want her there, and Simon has been thrown in prison by the Shadowhunters, who are deeply suspicious of a vampire who can withstand sunlight.

As Clary uncovers more about her family's past, she finds an ally in mysterious Shadowhunter Sebastian. With Valentine mustering the full force of his power to destroy all Shadowhunters forever, their only chance to defeat him is to fight alongside their eternal enemies. But can Downworlders and Shadowhunters put aside their hatred to work together? While Jace realizes exactly how much he's willing to risk for Clary, can she harness her newfound powers to help save the Glass City - whatever the cost?

SPOILERS

Amazing! I don't know if there are enough words to describe how great this series is! City of Glass was a great book in the series. I loved being in the world of Idris. It sounds like a beautiful and old world! I was so glad Jace wasn't Clary's sister!!! Jace and Clary are made for each other. Sebastian is an evil horrible person. I have a feeling he isn't really dead. In a way I felt Valentine truly believed he was doing the right thing and I really do think he loved Jace in his own way.

I LOVE Magnus I think he is one of my favourite characters, I cant wait to read Magnus's own short stories.

I wasn't sure of Simon as I was all team Jace at the start but now I really like him as well. I think he should end up with Maia not Isabelle.

I cant believe little Max was killed it really shocked me!

Overall I really loved this book!! I cant wait to read more!

Excerpt
“It is time.” Her voice purred like a kitten, but Indiana suspected she was really a feral animal on the inside. “For what?” Her voice was raspy, hesitant and unsure if she really wanted to know the answer. Somewhere, deep inside, she suspected she already knew. “Just remember I’m doing this for us,” Sam whispered into her ear. “So we can be together forever.” Before Indiana could question him further, she felt a flurry of hands over her body. Indiana tried to open her eyes, but a warm hand reached up and carefully covered them. Indiana was bitten – hard, and she groaned in pleasure. Shocked by her unexpected display, she clutched her hands outwards. Feeling the writhe of skin on skin, she tried to pull herself free. The tickle of fingers across her neck and down her spine calmed her with their warm familiarity. “It’s okay, Indiana.” The feathery words danced across her skin, warm like a summer breeze. She stilled and let Sam’s fingers intertwine with her own, relieved by his simple touch. Time seemed to move forward and Indiana was presented with brief snippets of fleeting images; Camilla biting Sam, biting her. Indiana enjoying the pain of Camilla’s sharp teeth as they gnashed at her neck, her thighs and her wrist. The flurry of skin and hands and teeth as they writhed together in the height of passion. Pale hands slithered over her own luminescent skin, then Sam’s darker skin brushed against her own, warming her and protecting her but against what she was unsure. Then Camilla poised over Sam, a knife in her hand. A flash of blood as it splayed out from a gaping neck wound. Indiana’s involuntary gasp and then choking sob at the sight of the cavernous hole. Hungry sucking as Camilla drank her fill. A warm hand, its fingers still laced through hers, slowing turning ice cold.

Review

I have mixed feelings about The Here and Now. The concept of the story was really intriguing and the twists, turns and how everything connected was done really well. Time Travel isn't something I tend to read but the reason for the time travelling really had me gripped, a world where disease has destroyed a lot of the inhabitants and they fled because there was nothing left to be done, the world had officially fell apart.

I liked the characters. Prenna is a strong heroine, she has a lot to deal with and the restrictions on her life is so hard on her and she tries and struggles so much. Step in Ethan, I loved him as the male protagonist he is just a perfect sweet guy.

The problem I had, was the writing. I don't know what it is that got to me but, it just didn't seem to flow right, it felt broken in some places. And I struggled with it at times, as I wanted to keep reading, I was loving the story but the writing was letting it down.

Overall I liked the concept of the story, the characters where interesting but the writing did let it down for me. The story was left open ended, and I am not sure if there is more books going to be written in this world but if not I am satisfied with the ending.

Connect With Kelly

I'm a former middle school language arts teacher turned full-time author and editor. I write everything from picture books to new adult, and my favorite genres are paranormal/fantasy and romance.

You are the author of the Touch Of Death Series, The Monster Within, and more! You know I love the Touch of death series. Tell us how you got the idea for the series?

The idea for this series came to me when I was researching for another book. I discovered a myth about the 13th sign of the zodiac (Ophiuchus) and Medusa. I had never heard it before and thought it would make a great concept for a book. So I created a cast of characters who were descended from Medusa and born under the sign of Ophiuchus.

Blurb

Jodi Marshall isn’t sure how she went from normal teenager to walking disaster. One minute she’s in her junior year of high school, spending time with her amazing boyfriend and her best friend. The next she’s being stalked by some guy no one seems to know.

After the stranger, Alex, reveals himself, Jodi learns he’s not a normal teenager and neither is she. With a kiss that kills and a touch that brings the dead back to life, Jodi discovers she’s part of a branch of necromancers born under the 13th sign of the zodiac, Ophiuchus. A branch of necromancers that are descendents of Medusa. A branch of necromancers with poisoned blood writhing in their veins.

Jodi’s deadly to the living and even more deadly to the deceased. She has to leave her old, normal life behind before she hurts the people she loves. As if that isn’t difficult enough, Jodi discovers she’s the chosen one who has to save the rest of her kind from perishing at the hands of Hades. If she can’t figure out how to control her power, history will repeat itself, and her race will become extinct.

You released your new YA series, The Monster Within in 2014. Tell us about this series.

The Monster Within was actually inspired by The Touch of Death series. While I was writing Touch of Death I was having fun with zombie scenes and really wanted to tell the story of someone who had been brought back to life. The catch was I didn't want that person to be a zombie. So I created Sam, a girl who dies of cancer and is brought back as a monster. She looks perfectly normal, but she has to kill in order to survive. It's really a story about Sam's desire to live versus her unwillingness to sacrifice others for her own survival. There's a definite Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde feel to it with witchcraft thrown in. The sequel, The Darkness Within, releases in June 2015.

The moment seventeen-year-old Samantha Thompson crawls out of her grave, her second chance at life begins. She died of cancer with her long-time boyfriend, Ethan, by her side—a completely unfair shot at life. But Ethan found a way to bring her back, like he promised he would. Only Sam came back wrong.

She's now a monster that drains others' lives to survive. And after she kills, she’s tortured by visions—glimpses into her victims would-have-been futures had she not killed them. Barely able to live with herself and trying to make things right, Sam ends up a pawn in a vicious game of payback within the local coven of witches.
But when the game reveals what Ethan had to do to save Sam, she must make a choice that will change all their lives forever.
