Blurb

The realization that Jax still affected me so strongly was a jagged pill to swallow. He'd only been part of my life for five short weeks two years ago. But now he was back. Walking into a deal I'd worked hard to close. And God, he was magnificent. His eyes were a brown so dark they were nearly black. Thickly lashed, they were relentless in their intensity. Had I really thought they were soft and warm? There was nothing soft about Jackson Rutledge. He was a hard and jaded man, cut from a ruthless cloth.

In that moment I understood how badly I wanted to unravel the mystery of Jax. Bad enough that I didn't mind how much it was going to cost me….

Review

Recently I read Sylvia Day's Crossfire Series and loved them, so I wanted to pick up something else from the author.

Afterburn is a quick, addictive read. I read in it a few hours. It is a short novella so it can be read in an hour or so depending on how fast you read. Being a Novella you are immersed in the story from the beginning, which I love in a short read. From what I have read of Sylvia Day's work and reading the Cross fire series, I can tell Sylvia's characters have similar character characteristic's that cross over into all her books. We don't have a straight forward, fairy tale romance, there is complications and secrets and characters with real issues. There is sex in Afterburn but it's not as streamy as in previous stuff I have read.

I really liked Gia the female protagonist, she's feisty and vulnerable at the same time. Sylvia Day writes strong female characters, they may have needs that sometimes make them vulnerable but they know what they want and learn from there mistakes, like Gia. Jax the male protagonist is hot, but want I love is that he is complicated and confusing and egotistical but underneath he is sad and scared of his feelings.

The world Afterburn is set in of celebrity, the High stakes and competition of the restaurant industry mixed with politics is interesting and set in the backdrop of Manhattan, it makes for a thrilling read with a hot romance and stong, normal characters. I definitely will be picking up more of Sylvia Day's work.

Note:

I also read the second book is this mini series, Aftershock. I didn't want to do a full review as it would give away what happened. I have to say I enjoyed it as much as Aftershock. It ends satisfying but I would still love to hear more from Jax and Gia.
