Sixteen-year-old Lyric Walker’s life is forever changed when she witnesses the arrival of 30,000 Alpha, a five-nation race of ocean-dwelling warriors, on her beach in Coney Island. The world’s initial wonder and awe over the Alpha quickly turns ugly and paranoid and violent, and Lyric’s small town transforms into a military zone with humans on one side and Alpha on the other. When Lyric is recruited to help the crown prince, a boy named Fathom, assimilate, she begins to fall for him. But their love is a dangerous one, and there are forces on both sides working to keep them apart. Only, what if the Alpha are not actually the enemy? What if they are in fact humanity’s only hope of survival? Because the real enemy is coming. And it’s more terrifying than anything the world has ever seen.

Review

So Undertow was a surprise read for me. Going into it I wasn't sure what I was going to think. Mermaids and me do not get on. I have this thing with mermaids and fairies I just don't like them. BUT I frickin loved this book. It is one of my favourite of the year.

Michael Buckley is a genius. He brought the frickin mermaids out of the water. It's like Aliens invading the earth but their mermaids. And there not beautiful Ariel mermaids, well there is some of them but there's horrible ones with suckers and scales and ones that change colour to show their emotions. It's just ahhh. (The mermaids are called Alphas)

I really just want to jump up and down. It's that good!! So Michael Buckley changed my perception of mermaids but along with that I have found an amazing writer. The story was so gripping I couldn't put it down. The mermaids are being intrigued into human society though high school. Some humans and some Alphas  have been picked to be part of a scheme to kinda show people that they can live together side by side peacefully. Only there is a lot prejudices happening and a lot of violent for a YA book. I loved the violence, it made the book feel real and not like your typical urban fantasy book. It shows humans find prejudice in anything and it was the same for the Alphas they where prejudice to the humans.

The Story has so many twists and turns which I loved I keep thinking OMG what is happening and that ending! I need the next book NOW.

The Characters where amazing. I loved Lyric the protagonist. She is so feisty. And Fathom OMG, a new book boyfriend. The interaction between Lyric and Fathom I loved. Also Lyrics best friend I adored she was so sarcastic and her home life was scary and made the story feel so real.

Overall I loved this book so much, a great story, great characters, great writing. This book is just AMAZINg!!!! Get it NOW and read it. Am not kidding you won't be disappointed.

  1. I'm so glad I'm not the only person who doesn't like mermaids. I just finished a book that featured them and I had a hard time with the whole thing. I'm so glad to hear how much you enjoyed it and I'm definitely adding it to my TBR!

  2. Yay I am so glad you loved this. The romance aspect didn't work for me, but the world and writing more than made up for it.

    1. I agree, I did like the romance but I was engrossed in the action and the writing. I can't wait to pick up the next book in the series.
